The Gentleman Farmer

Robert Martin liked his breakfast a particular way, and his wife, Harriet, prepared it perfectly, since Robert’s sister had shown her how it was done the moment the new Mrs. Martin had moved into her their home. Mr. Martin appraised his wife as she served the egg and the ham, the porridge and the milk, now. Brown curls fell across her face, the shy smile she had carried ever since their wedding night shadowed by rings. She was a curvy thing, with a round bottom and a soft belly draped with simple, soft pink cotton. Her breasts hung a ways, when they were released from the binding clothing Harriet wore at the day time. Robert loved suckling those breasts; he was like a calf nuzzling its mother’s teats. And when he did get his mouth on those large, rosy circles, his wife giggled and giggled in her silly, charming way. Her unaffectedness was heady and just the thing to please a gentleman farmer, like himself. All said, his life since he and Mrs. Martin had married had been delightful. He looked forward to the day his sister married and moved away, but until then, they all maintained a splendid kinship in their cozy home.

“And what are your chores today, Mr. Martin?” Harriet Martin asked, as she finally settled into her own chair and clasped her mug of warm milk in her hands. Robert’s sister had already started on her breakfast, chewing slowly as she had recently read a paper on the benefits of masticating one’s food very thoroughly. It was typical of his sister to pick up on every fad. Really, though, he knew his sister was only waiting for him to leave for the morning so she could launch into an hour’s worth of gossip with his wife.

Oh, when would that woman get herself wedded and move into her own home?

“I must clean the barn today,” Mr. Martin said. “I’ve let it go too long since the spring births and it’s filthy.”

“That’s some language,” Robert’s sister said, gingerly setting her spoon in her empty bowl.

Soon, Robert Martin though, darkly. He would find her a husband as soon as was humanly possible. Perhaps that Mrs. Emma Knightley could help him find someone. He’d heard she’d removed herself from the duties of matchmaking, and his eggs turned sour at the idea of even approaching the peacock of a lady, but she might make an exception this one time. For a man with whom she thought she had a kind acquaintance.

“Oh, I don’t mind it in my kitchen,” Harriet Martin said. There was little that could dampen the cheerfulness in her spirit. Laying claim to a kitchen that had, her whole life before Harriet moved in, been Robert’s sister’s only seemed to perk Harriet up even more. “The words Mr. Martin says, I mean. Oh, perhaps not when guests are come by. We want to be on our best behavior, then. Why, just yesterday I had a letter from Emma Knightly.
